Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 13, 2026

ALTtext ("ALTtext," "we," "us") is operated by Twilightscapes. This policy explains what we collect, why, and who we share it with. The short version: we built ALTtext to need as little of your data as possible — no accounts, no ad tracking, and we don't store the images you upload.

Your images

When you generate alt text, your image is downscaled in your browser and sent to Google's Gemini API, which returns a text description. We do not store your images on our servers — the image passes through our service, is sent to Google for processing, and the description is returned to you. Google processes the image under its own terms; see Google's privacy documentation for how they handle API data.

In the browser extensions, the same is true for images you describe via the toolbar, right-click, or the Bluesky helper — the image is sent only to generate a description and is not stored by us.

Usage and rate limiting

To enforce the free daily limit, we keep a short-lived, per-day count keyed to your IP address. It's used only to count requests against the free cap and is not used to identify or profile you.

Licenses and payment

If you buy ALTtext Pro, payment is handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. We store the license key we issue, the email address associated with the purchase, and Stripe's customer / subscription identifiers — so we can validate your license and manage your subscription.

Data stored in your browser

Your license key and your "recent generations" history are stored locally in your browser (or extension storage) — on your device, not on our servers. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Who we share data with

We do not sell your data, and we don't use advertising or cross-site tracking.

Retention

Images aren't retained. Usage counts reset daily. License records are kept while your license is active and for a reasonable period afterward for accounting and support.

Your choices

You can request access to, or deletion of, the license data associated with your purchase by emailingsupport@alttext.org. Because ALTtext has no accounts and doesn't store images, there is very little personal data to begin with.

Children

ALTtext is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes

We may update this policy; we'll change the "last updated" date above when we do. Material changes will be noted on the site.
